Some of you really want to send your kids to camp, but financial burdens are making it difficult. Have you considered fundraising for camp? Fundraisers are more than just a way to get money; they’re also an opportunity to help your child learn valuable life skills & confidence in achieving goals.

Remember that somewhere, someone needs help… the very help that your kids may be able to provide. Here are some ideas to help you get started:

Water a yard

Pick weeds out of flower beds

Cut grass

Rake leaves

Pick up doggy doo-doo

Walk a dog or two

Read to the elderly

Sort items for recycling

Garage Sale

Lemonade Stand

Make & sell cookies

Make & sell popcorn

Wash windows

Babysitting

“There are no menial jobs, only menial attitudes.” ~ William John Bennett

HarrahChurch is having the ”Exploring Hope Craft Fair” May 12 from 9:00-1:00 in the Worship Center. This is another great way to raise money. Contact Melinda Kloster at 651-0579 for info.

If your family chooses to do a fundraiser, here’s how to give your child the best experience:

Safety first. Since fundraisers involve money and the public, always discuss good safety measures with your children. For example, organize groups of at least two children, and make sure a parent or other adult is present. Caution your child against going into homes, opting instead to remain outside when making a sale. Also have your child collect money in a pocket or zippered pouch that’s kept hidden.

Manners count. Kids can practice people skills when fundraising. Encourage them to make eye contact, speak clearly and remain upbeat even when someone turns them away. Learning to smile and say a polite thank you when rejected is a skill that will reap benefits in life.

Achieving goals takes work. When parents do the work, kids miss out on the pride of achievement. Join them in the effort, but let them take the lead. Encourage your child to explore creative ways to achieve & focus on the goal.

Visit the KIDS CAMP PAGE to learn more about what your kids can experience this summer.

What are some more ideas you can share in the comment section below?

We feel that the tween years are an important developmental stage in the lives of 5th & 6th graders. It is during these years that their values SHIFT from that of their parents to their own. SHIFT is designed to help student’s values conform to the pattern of Christ and not of this world.

PRESCHOOL

It’s the month of L-O-V-E. Love! So, let’s celebrate it by showing our love to the one who loves us more than anyone!

This month, we will teach our preschoolers to: “Love . . . God with all your heart,” (Matthew 22:37, NIrV). And how do we love God with our all our hearts? Why, we look to Jesus to teach us. Through the month of February, Jesus will teach us how to love God. We can love God by doing what He wants us to do as He sat in the temple as a young boy of 12. We can love God by loving others, and we can love God by talking to Him through prayer.

By sharing what Jesus taught us while He was here on earth, we pray that our preschoolers will begin to understand how to love their heavenly Father who loves them so very much.

ELEMENTARY

Stop and think about someone you really admire.

Are you thinking of someone? Whether that person is a teacher, coach, friend or family member, he or she is valuable to you. You recognize that this person is important because what they do impacts your life. But did you know that everyone is valuable? That’s right. Your boss, your mailman, your babysitter and your neighbor—they are all valuable.

Every person has value, not because of what they do, but because each and every person has been put together by God. When God created people, He made them in His image. That means every person alive today has been put together in the likeness of God. So every person has value. And it’s our job to help everyone feel like they are valuable.

When we show other people how valuable they really are, we are showing them honor. There are many ways to honor someone. Moses gave us the Ten Commandments to teach us to honor our mother and father (Exodus 20:12). Paul taught us to honor the authorities who have been placed over us on earth (Romans 13:1). When Jesus was on earth, He taught us to honor everyone—even those who are overlooked and unpopular.

Jesus showed other people how valuable they really were by spending time with them. He ate dinner with people who usually ate alone. He served people who were used to doing the serving. He paid attention to people who normally didn’t get a lot of attention. If Jesus thought it was important to honor everyone, then we should follow His example.

This February, we’re taking on the Ultimate Challenge of showing the highest degree of honor. We’ll be looking to David as a mentor and exploring his life in 1 and 2 Samuel, and we will define honor as “letting someone know you see how valuable they really are.”

I can’t wait to see what happens in February when we take on the Ultimate Challengeof showing the highest degree of honor!

Preschool

A new year gives us another reason to celebrate that Jesus wants to be my friend forever!

This month, we will share several of the miracles that Jesus performed in His short time with us here on earth, showing us that nothing is too hard for Him. If Jesus is so amazing and powerful that He can walk on water then surely He can help me learn to share with my friends.

Preschoolers will hear how Jesus turned water to wine (we call it a “super fancy drink”), helped His friends fill their nets with fish, fed thousands with two fishes and five loaves of bread, and calmed a storm by just telling it to stop. Through each story, our little ones will learn that Jesus can do anything, and “With God, all things are possible,” (Matthew 19:26).

Take time this month to share the awesome power of God with your preschoolers. Show them your awe as you share these miraculous stories. Think of how those surrounding Jesus must have felt as He performed miracle after miracle doing things that were not humanly possible and proving time and again that He was the Son of God.

January is a great time to work on changing the way we play this game of life. So, we’re going to spend the month in Proverbs, a book packed full of wise and visual verses to challenge our thinking—especially about the topic of Self-Control.

Self-control means choosing to do what you should do—and not what you want to do. In the moment, that’s hard for a lot of us. The good news is that God doesn’t ask us to do anything all on our own. We’ll share verses like 2 Peter 1:3 that say: “God’s given us everything we need to lead a godly life.” Self-control is a way to display to the world around us that we have God in our lives. And He’s present every hour of every day, ready to help us take control of our thoughts, words and actions.

Each week, we’ll talk specifically about choosing to have self-control in areas where we know kids (and adults) typically struggle, plus we’ll focus on faith skills like navigating the Bible and personalizing Scripture in their everyday lives.

Our Bottom Lines are:

God can give you the power to control yourself.

Pause before you lose your temper.

Select your words carefully.

Know when to stop.

Use the Bible to guide your thoughts.

We are so excited about this month in Proverbs with a different principle each week addressing real life situations where we need self-control. Isn’t it great to know that God’s given us everything we need to live a godly life and to grow in wisdom? We can’t wait to hear what you think about Self-control: Changing the way you play!

Sunday, the KID’S leaders connected the world of HarrahKIDS to the world of WeraKIDS.

They talked about the differences of their worlds and showed pictures for the kids to connect in a visible way. Afterwards, they wrote out prayers for Wera, Uganda and posted them on our prayer wall.

Come down the hallway to the NexGen room (where the kids gather for worship) to see what your child is praying for and lift these children’s prayers up.

TEACHING YOUR CHILD HOW TO PRAY:

Perhaps you’ve never prayed with your children. But no matter how old they are, it’s never too late to start. It helps to remember that prayer is simply talking with God.

Here are a few ideas on how to get started:

J.O.Y Prayer, this is a simple acronym that is easy to remember.

J – stands for “Jesus.” Begin the prayer by simply adoring Jesus and God for who they are and what they do.

O – Others – stands for “Others.” Ask your child who they would like to pray for. Maybe it’s the children in Wera, a friend, somebody at school, or an enemy.

Y – Yourself – stands for “Yourself.” Ask your child what they need prayer for, struggles, school, an area of their life in which they need God’s help. Pray for forgiveness for the wrong choices they may have made that day and the desire to make the wise choice.

Sentence Prayer, You can help your children pray aloud by giving them a sentence to complete, such as:

“Lord, I thank you for …”

“Lord, forgive me for …”

“Lord, help my friend …”

“Lord, help me be more …”

“Lord, help me to let go of …”

“Lord, give me the courage to …”

Lord, one of the fears I need help with is …”
